Our Mission and the Legacy of Manjummel Province

We are based in Manjummel, a province with a rich spiritual heritage that traces its roots back to 1857, when Fr. Francis Kuruppachery, along with two companions, established a Carmelite community at Koonammavu under the guidance of the Vicar Apostolic of Verapoly, Rt. Rev. Dr. Bernardine Baccinelli. Despite early challenges, the mission persevered, and after 17 years, a monastery was built at Manjummel, dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, marking a new chapter in the Carmelite journey.

Under the leadership of various dedicated priests, the mission flourished, giving rise to several monasteries and apostolic centers. By 1957, the congregation officially became part of the First Order of the Discalced Carmelites, further strengthening its spiritual and missionary commitments. The Manjummel Province also played a crucial role in supporting missionary work in Mangalore and Goa, demonstrating its commitment to spreading the Carmelite spirituality.

Our Mission to Spread the Brown Scapular Devotion

In 2022, the Provincial of Manjummel Monastery appointed Fr. Philip Karikkasseri as the Brown Scapular Confraternity Delegate, entrusting him with the mission of promoting this powerful Marian devotion worldwide. Our journey began in the Varapuzha Diocese, where we successfully introduced the Brown Scapular Enrollment to countless faithful. Now, we have set our focus on the Kottapuram Diocese, aiming to reach every parish and spread this sacred devotion among laypeople.

On February 22, 2025, Bishop Ambrose Puthenveetil of the Kottapuram Diocese blessed and granted permission for us to officially begin the Brown Scapular mission in his diocese. With this blessing, we are working tirelessly to visit parishes, encourage participation in the Scapular Confraternity, and organize Holy Masses and enrollment ceremonies for the faithful.

As a team devoted to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, we are committed to fulfilling this mission with zeal, ensuring that the Brown Scapular devotion reaches people all over the world.Write your text here...
